Vinh Long police have detained Le Hoang Anh Vu, 34, for allegedly renting a car under false pretenses before taking it to a pawn shop and using it as collateral for VND30 million.
According to investigators, on June 1, Vu used a fake ID card and driver’s license to rent a car from N.M.T., 39, claiming that he needed the vehicle to travel to Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam.
When the original rental period expired, Vu contacted T. and requested an extension, which the owner agreed to.
However, facing financial difficulties, Vu allegedly took the vehicle to a pawn shop and received VND30 million.
When T. later asked for the car to be returned, Vu admitted that he had pawned it and promised to redeem it.
He subsequently avoided T.’s calls and failed to return the vehicle, prompting T. to report the case to police.
On September 18, police located Vu at a hotel in Ho Chi Minh city and brought him in for questioning. During the investigation, Vu admitted to pawning the rented vehicle.
Police later recovered the car as evidence and are continuing to handle the case in accordance with the law.
